Access keys
We use access keys you to allow you to jump directly to certain links or certain areas on a page without having to move your mouse at all. By holding down the keys below at the same time, for example ALT + S, a link becomes highlighted and you can then press the Enter key to activate the link.
- On Windows, you can press Alt + an access key;
- On Macintosh, you can press Control + an access key.
Please note that entering access keys may differ on some browsers. Firefox, for example, uses the combination Alt + Shift + Access key.
Our access keys follow the UK Government system:
- [S] Skip to content
- [1] Home page
- [2] Search
- [4] Main Navigation
- [6] Secondary Navigation
- [0] Help using this site (this page)
Skip links
For those using a screen reader, the content comes before the navigation on each page — at the start of the content you have the option to skip to the navigation using these links:
- Skip to content (access key S)
- Skip to main navigation (access key 4)
- Skip to secondary navigation (access key 6)
The tab key
You can use the Tab key on your keyboard to move between links on a page. A single press of Tab highlights the next link, Shift + Tab highlights the previous link. All forms on Neweys Online have a logical tab sequence.
Headings
H1 tags are used for main titles, H2, H3 and H4 tags for subtitles. If you use a screen reader you can skip to the next section on a page using one of these keystrokes:
- H to cycle forwards through the headings.
- Shift + H to cycle backwards through the headings.
- 1 to navigate to the next level 1 heading (or a number between 1 and 6 to navigate to the next heading on this level).
- Shift + 1 to navigate to the previous level 1 heading (or a number between 1 and 6 to navigate to the previous heading on this level).
- INSERT + F6 to provide a list of all headings.
In Opera, the following keys can be used to navigate headings:
- S to cycle forwards through the headings
- W to cycle backwards through the headings
Links
We have tried to make all link names meaningful and, to help you navigate, many links have tooltips which briefly describe what you will find if you follow the link. We also indicate if a link opens in a new window with a tooltip and if the destination is to another website.

Most browsers allow you to tailor your browsing experience to your needs. Tools and features built in to the browser will help you change colours, change the type and size of fonts and even block content.
Resizing fonts
If you have a mouse with a wheel you can alter the size of the text size by holding down ctrl (PC) or command (Mac) on your keyboard while scrolling the mouse wheel up and down. Alternatively, you can use the contextual menus:
| Browser | Instructions |
|---|---|
| Internet Explorer | View > Text Size |
| Firefox, Netscape 8 | View > Text Size |
| Opera | View > Zoom |
| Netscape 6, 7, Mozilla | View > Text Zoom |
| Safari (Mac) | View > Make Text Bigger |

Accessing PDF documents
The PDF file format is a common internet file format. It’s used because it faithfully preserves the look and feel of the original document complete with fonts, colours, images, and layout. We use PDFs for data sheets and other documents on Neweys Online. To open a PDF file you will need to download Acrobat Reader and install it on your computer. It is free of charge from the Adobe website.
